About Us

Urban Country Design
is a mother and daughter team who has combined their talents to create beautiful one of a kind jewellery and home décor items. Together they have achieved the perfect balance of the simple elegance of contemporary design and the warmth of country charm.

Birgit Clark and Selene Mitchell are the creative spirits behind Urban Country Design. Techniques of kiln fusing and slumping are used to shape their creations into being. Strikingly beautiful platters, distinctive dinnerware, and unique vases — Birgit’s and Selene’s work shows an intuitive understanding of their raw materials and an adventurous spirit that elevates functional pieces to works of art. The result, whether it is a piece of jewellery or a piece to adorn your home, is a spectacular display that gives each piece a singular character and brilliance. Each piece is uniquely designed and crafted, so no two are exactly alike.

Birgit, a local artist from Hanover, resides with her husband. Together they have two children and 3 grandchildren. Birgit received her training in Toronto where she applied her graphic art skills. In 2004 she retired and relocated in Hanover at which time she decided to apply her skills to create the one of a kind art.

Selene Mitchell lives in Oshawa with her husband and daughter. She works as an Educational Assistant with a local school board in addition to her creative endeavours with the Urban Country Design. Selene has attended various glass design and fusion courses in Toronto.

The process involves choosing colours, visualizing designs, cutting, grinding, and the heating of glass to high temperatures. Layers of glass are fused together at temperatures ranging from 1350 to 1500 degrees F. for approximately 14 hours per firing which creates a flat piece of glass. When a piece is to be bent into or over a ceramic mould, it requires additional firings. Then each piece is meticulously cold-worked and kiln-annealed for strength and durability. This results in a beautifully finished and unique piece of art

Modern day use of glass, as a medium, presents the unique blending of science and art. The combination of this incredible material and the intense heat of a kiln can produce amazing and intriguing, even surprising results.
